I like to think I'm not a snob but I am not buying a Skoda

(maybe I am a closet snob ?)

More fool you - a base Fabia can be had for £7700, a base Polo for £1500-£2000 more

    Same car......

I accept your numbers as I do not know (though I do know the Polo seems highly priced) but I suspect the price when selling it will reflect this. Would you care to comment on total ownership costs ?

I mean, if the Skoda is £7700-£2000 (after 5 years) the cost is £5700, but if the Polo is £9700-£5700, then the cost is £4000 and the higher priced Polo would actually be better value.

I'm not sure I follow. Both Skoda Fabia and VW Polo lose money at roughly the same rate now. Skoda's are better value and you'd be a real fool to dismiss them!

I'm not sure I follow either but I doubt you'd see the extra £1500 to £2000 on the Polo at resale (especially given 6 month old ex-hire ones can be had for £6500)

At the moment, looking at the Hyundai i10 as well but please do tell on the Polos.
