Our wonderful rail service!
It's just cr*p isn't it!
We have just booked a train journey from Paris to Rome, and returning from Florence to Paris including a 1st class 4 share couchette (sleeper car) for the grand total of £178 for two of us.
1,562 miles across three countries.
Doncaster to London is 348 miles and is £252.
Pathetic
I can't even find any discount codes to bring the price down

I can't believe that you can't find a cheaper Doncaster London ticket have you tried the GNER web site?Waddle you do eh?0

yeah and trainline and midland mainline and virgin.
The problem is that they are not releasing tickets until the 11th hour which is a joke.
The terms of National Rail's charter is that they issue them 12 weeks b4 travel but they are so ridiculously way behind that cheap fairs are almost impossible to come by

Would you be able to tell me where you booked your Paris to Rome train tickets as I would maybe like to do the same thing some time.0

Thats a great bargain care to share?
And we all thought the BR days were so under invested
Goverment solution : sell off
Reality : Rip off, the above just confirms it BIG time
I cant recall many major train collisions under BR, now on average there are too many, so whats more under invested now or then?
I fly to London cheaper and quicker! If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:

Clapham Junction springs to mind. I don't think any of the accidents since privatisation killed that many people.seaniboy wrote:I cant recall many major train collisions under BR, now on average there are too many, so whats more under invested now or then?
You don't post under the name Seaneeboy on another website do you?0 -
i just checked a date in february (as i'm not sure when you're going) on virgin trains and it showed apex singles from just £31 each way depending on the time of day you go, which would total £124 instead... sometimes it's cheaper to book single tickets each way rather than a return!0

I am going in April. The February dates are cheaper because they are nearer. The ridiculous thing is that the later the seats are released, the earlier the cheaper fairs go.
My comparison was about our transport system versus European rail networks.
I booked the Paris to Rome tickets via https://www.raileurope.co.uk
They are brilliant. Three months b4 you travel the "mini c" offer becomes available (that's the deal and you have to be quick).
I booked singles as we are coming back from Florence, but it's the same deal whether for return or single.
We wanted to go by train to add to the experience.Tried and Tested0 -
i'd go for buying the tickets a few days before you go. as said before singles are usually cheaper and if for any reason you miss the connecting train you havent lost the return trip. with some return journeys you must specifi the time and day of the return journey. unless of course you can afford the price of an open return ticket!!0
