My first hand at growing end of last year and leeks come out best. These have gone through all that bad snow and I really thought they where done for. Still growing big, soon should be able to pick some soon.

I grew leeks in four large tubs over the winter in my yard and I was amazed at how hardy they are.
It was my first attempt too, just threw the seeds in the compost in the Autumn and forgot about them.
We ended up with so many leeks I ended up giving them away in the end.
They were slow to grow at first but had a sudden growth spurt and suddenly they were ready.
I'm going to do the same again this year.

I'd use them soon, because in my experience leeks sown the year before, to grow on in this year, go to seed very quickly.

If you can't use them up cooked fresh I find leeks (like onions) freeze well for future use. Chop them up and flash freeze on a tray, then bag up. Can be used straight from the freezer as a handful at the start of making a stew/soup etc.
