Credit Cards building Credit Rating?....

Hey folks - I was wonderig if you could help me on something.....

I have recently managed to pay off a big chunk of debt and I am happy to say I am debt free now. However, after years and years of bad money management I have a credit rating that is hanging in tatters. So this is my next aim - to try and sort this out as much as I can.

I therefore ensure that every bill is paid on time etc, - I have a credit card (that I had before all the money troubles started) that I spend a small amount on every month and then totally pay the balance. Recently I tried to get credit for a catalouge purchase - which was another way of hopefully building my credit up, and I was refused. This didnt surprise me to be honest.

My main question is do you think if I got another credit card - like a capital one card or something else I will probablies get approved for, and run this like my other credit card - ie paying the full balance every month - would this help my credit rating along or would it just be a pointless excercise. My line of thinking on this is that i would be demonstrating that I can borrow money and yet pay it back effectively....

Any ideas? I hope this makes sense!

Any other tips / hints on how to improve my credit rating would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks!

why do you want to improve your credit rating?

what exactly do your credit files say? ... missed payments, defaults, CCjs and when

Well its a long term plan to be honest. I really want to get a mortgage in the future - but there wouldnt be any way of getting that as things stand - I just feel I have a lot of re-building to do where this is concerned.

It was missed payments mainly - from my credit card. This would have occured quite a few times, the last time being over 2 years ago nearly. Initially the bank said once I had paid the card off then the account would be taken away from me due to the bad conduct - but I managed to get a card and like I said I use the account now.

I cannot access my credit file - I have tried and tried and it never goes through, but I know my rating must be bad. Its a shame because I feel like I have really turned my attitude towards money around - but Im still tarnished!

it's important to get access to your credit record; why exactly can't you get them
you have a statuary right to the records for £2.

Yes, I know I will definately get my file - to be honest I dont know the reasons why I can't seem to acess at the moment.

However, I would still like to know if having a 2nd credit card that I paid off every month - the same as I do with my current one - would help my credit rating in any way?

    Any Ideas?
