Collecting item - safest payment method?

I am bidding on and currently winning an auction for a jacket - about £50 plus £9 P&P, which I dont mind paying. However the seller lives just 15 mins away from me, I have asked him if I could collect and he has agreed, he also says I can pay cash if I prefer. I have no concerns about the action or the safety about collecting it as my husband will be with me. However I would welcome other people's thoughts. If I pay by palpal then collect am I protected in any way? What do people think about paying cash? Thanks for your help.

The seller would be silly to accept paypal on this as it leaves him vulnerable to chargebacks.

Cash is a sensible way to pay.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • Yep, cash on collection is the best way to go. It's convenient for both parties, and since it's paid at the same time the goods are inspected, disputes are extremely unlikely.

funny, i had the reverse problem. i asked if i could pick an item up from a local seller and he said yes, only if i paid in advance with paypal

my concern was that maybe the item wasnt as described and he would have cleared out his paypal account in the meantime....
