Littlewoods

Hope this is in the right place. I hadnt used Littlewoods for sometime but recently I ordered some trainers when I had used them previously I had set up a DD with them. As I had a DD set up with them assumed they would take the payment to cover the monthly payment. After noticing no money had gone I looked on my statement and I had incurred a late charge.I knew I had a DD so I contacted my bank who said that Littlewoods had cancelled the DD and not informed me. Can they do this or do they have to advise me that they are cancelling it so obvioulsy this wouldnt happen

Why would they need to inform you.
That DD was set up for that transaction.

You would have received some sort of paperwork asking you 'how are you going to pay'

Never presume anything but if its a first offence, give Littlewoods a ring and explain, they might just refund you on this occasion.

Surely though they set it up if they were going to cancel the dd they should inform esp after the DD hadnt been used..So as far as I knew the DD was active and ready to be used Any hoo I have contacted them and they have said that if the DD isnt used for 6 months they can cancel. I have looked in their terms and conditions theres no mention of this also Ive looked and 13 months seems to be the dormancy period or can a company just cancel when they feel like it?

Only you can cancel a Direct Debit on your bank account.

Littlewoods, or any company, can of course decide not to use a DD you have set up, and it appears that that is what has happened in this case.

But as has been said above, did they ask for the money?
Did you tell them to use the DD, or did you just assume?

Direct Debits can be cancelled by the originator which has happened in this case. I have seen the details from the bank saying originator cancelled. So it shows companies can cancel without notifying you which isnt right. The DD was set up for them I gave the instruction to set the DD so they could take the min payment every month and this is the agreement we had but they decided to cancel the DD

OK. That means that you cancelled it. You originated the DD as the bank account holder.

And as the DD was cancelled, clearly the company could not use it to get money from you.

Obviously you will not want to take my word for it (see my signature), but ask you bank whoo the originator is.

No the originator is the company who call for the Direct Debits. If you cancel a DD with your bank it will say customer cancelled. If company such as Littlewoods cancel then they have cancelled the payment which is what they have done. I am not the orginator the company are the orignators as they are the ones dealing with the BACS system.

You are wrong. Companies can also cancel direct debits. Maybe you are thinking of standing orders.

One of my IT people tells me that we can cancel a customers DD by sending an '0C' instruction.
I also read something about unused DD's being cancelled automatically after 6 months for security purposes.
