Cat messing on floor...

need some advice please..got an adorable cat (approx 8ths old) from CPL on Thursday. Am keeping her in kitchen at night and when not in house, her litter tray is in kitchen. She has settled incredible well, eating well and on 1st day here messed in her litter tray (i was most impressed!). Yesterday she messed on kitchen floor twice and has done it once today so far, she is weeing in her tray. I know its very early days but i'm not too sure what to do - do i put another tray where she is messing? is there anything I can put in area that she's messed in(floor) that would discourage her doing it again?

She might not like to use the same litter tray for number 1s and number 2s so 2 litter trays may be the answer eventually.

It may also be that as it's a new house for her she is just trying to make it all hers...I would try bleaching the entire kitchen floor every time she messes on the floor to completely get rid of her "smell" to discourage her from going the toilet there again. This in turn will encourage her to use the litter tray because it smells like she does.

Oh and make sure her food and water are not too close to the litter tray, they don't like going to the toilet where they eat.

Generally the advice given re litter trays is one per cat plus one, as already mentioned some cats use one tray for peeing in and one for pooing in.

The best thing to get rid of any residual smell is a solution of biological washing powder, it breaks down any enzymes that might be remaining and is also safe for the cat.

thanks for advice, put another tray in kitchen so she has a choice where she goes. think it is going take a while as she messed on floor whilst i was out..will try the biological powder, see if it helps

The other thing worth trying is after meals to put her in the litter tray so she gets used to the idea of where she needs to go. She's in a new place so it may take a wee while to settle
