I've used B and Q peat free - it has been absolutely fine and a good price too, think was £2.98 50 litres.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Glad to hear I'm on the right path then. Thanks again everyone!0

We used B&Q peat free last year, but we've opted for their multipurpose one this year (although we do still have last year's in use). I keep getting random mushrooms growing in the peat free stuff!! :eek:0

Went to B&Q today and they have stopped the 3 for £10 offer on their 70 litre mp compost. Does anyone know if anywhere else doing this offer?0

Oh really? I'll keep an eye out for any fungi lurking in my pots then!0

I tried ASDA, Morrisons and a couple of others this year. ASDA had lumps of straw in it thich were really tangled up in the roots of seedlings. Morrisons and a couple of the others had pieces of plastic, coconut fibre and great big sticks in it. What I finally settled on as a better standard than the rest was Wickes. They have peat and peatfree versions at £12 for 4 x 70 Litres. Occasionally I've seen a twig in it, (maybe 4 or 5 in 3 sets of 4 bags) but compared to the rest there was really nothing but soil in it.0

I got the B & Q peat free stuff and it was just filled with sticks and bits of wood chips! Awful stuff! Got some john innes stuff and it was lovely but the best one seems to be the stuff I bought for a pound in asda- smart price stuff. Pretty good!Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790

I know this is MSE but I don't bother economising with cheap compost - I think it's a false economy, costing you more than you save. Stuck for some, late one eveing earlier this year. I bought a sack of Godwin's for £3-something. I posted about it at the time, saying it was lumpy. It turned out much as I'd expected - just about satisfactory for pots with large subjects, but prone to drying-out and unsuitable, in my opinion, for sowing fine seeds.
Mostly, I stick to Humax. I pay £4.50 for 60 litres and it's lovely stuff - fine, with added sand, good water retention, easy to re-wet and suitable for the finest seeds, as well as potting-on and for tubs etc. I just hope Scotts don't ruin it, now they've bought the company!0
