Anyone getting married abroad?

We're getting married in Sydney at Christmas :)

We decided to do it as the hassle of a wedding in here just got too much for us. We had the full traditional white wedding booked and I couldnt take the 'you must invite so and so, you must have this, you must do that' so we gave up! Plus OH has always hated the idea of having to say his vows in front of everyone (he gets very shy), so this made more sense.

We'll be getting married just the 2 of us, no family will be there. Future MIL2B is arriving in Melbourne (we're going straight there after the wedding) the day after the wedding (but she thinks we're getting married at the end of the holiday once she's gone home, so it's all a surprise).

My parents could never afford to come to australia and neither can any friends. But to be honest we decided we wanted this to be just us, so it doesn't bother us that no one is there :)

When we get back we're having the full reception so all the family can be included. We'll be having a meal with 60 people, speeches, photos and then in the evening a full evening reception for about 150 people :)

So very excited about it now!

Not having a dress for Australia as we're getting married on top of the Harbour Bridge so I have to wear special climbing suit, but for when I get back to the UK I'll be wearing http://www.coast-stores.com/VICTORIA-JANE-DRESS/Dresses---view-all/coast/fcp-product/2224668206 this dress. It's simple enough but 'weddingy'. I also think it would be great for a wedding abroad :)

When you get home do what YOU WANT! If you want cake and first dance go for it! Maybe a few informal speeches, like H2B doing one and maybe your dad? Plus the usual funny best man one :)

    Hi Northwest1965

Ive been looking through every to find where i read this. its not clear at all on the city clerks website is it? think its geared more towards the US.

I found it on the 2nd link for the blog its about 2/3rds of the way down- under marraige license New York, think i may call the city clerks office ahead to make sure. Hows your planning going, are you having any extras, flowers, photogarphers etc

I'm getting married in Philadelphia, however I'm from Philadelphia and my family lives there so my situation is a bit different then the rest of yours...

I bought my gown at "home" and stored it at my parents house until I took it to the dressmaker who is going to change it quite a bit.

I found a suit/ tux places that rents morning suits. As that what OH wants. I just googled morning suits, Philadelphia and found a store.

We need to be in PA 3 days before the wedding to get the marriage license, we will arrive a full week ahead of time.

My mom is taking care of a lot of the details, although I am picking out vendors. She is just contacting them for me.

For those of you getting married in the US I would go to theknot.com and go to the local board for the city in which you will be married. Those girls will be very knowledgeable about vendors, license laws etc. My local have been VERY helpful esp since I am so far away.

We are having a full reception in Philadelphia 120ish people, cocktail hour, 4 course dinner, open bar, cake, and dancing, etc and OH's family and friends will be traveling to the wedding so we will not have anything back in England.
  • Thanks so much for the advice and links, Clare. Gonna spend a bit of time tomorrow going through it all :-) x
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

    Hi guys
So glad I found this thread. I'm actually the mother of the bride and the wedding is booked for Florida. We still haven't got a wedding dress, have been looking for a while but everything seems too heavy and formal for a wedding on the beach. Any suggestions for where we should be looking. Many thanks

Oooh we love Florida, nearly got married there actually but decided we fancied California more for the honeymoon so it made more sense to have the wedding there instead. Where abouts are they getting married?

Not sure what your daughter's budget would be for a dress, but I've seen some lovely ones in Monsoon which are not too heavy or formal but still lovely - have you tried there? They are all on their website but the pics really don't do them justice compared to when you see them in the shop - the level of detail is amazing for the money, loads of beading, embroidery etc which makes them a bit nicer than just a plain dress.
