Hi
Wondering if you all jcould help me as you seem to be more educated in these things than me.

For a few years my son who is now 9 has wanted to sponser a childs education. Altho i have looked into it i have never known which one is going to do the best service or use the money wiser, i.e so that the least goes on admin etc and the biggest bit goes to where it is needed.

Wondering if nayone knows one of the better ones and also the draw backs to sponsering a child like this, rather than just a donation to charity.

Thanks

I can't say which is the best one to go for, however I would look for one where the benefit goes to the whole community rather than a specific child (which I think most of them have now moved towards).

If you are sponsoring a specific child, you are probably expected to write to the child with certain restrictions on what you can say, and the child will be expected to write back. That might be hard for your son to sustain.

But please don't discount the need for admin in this kind of work: it's essential if you want to properly account for the funds and ensure they get to the right place!

BTW, what a lovely chap you have!

and would an alternative be to look at the Oxfam or GoodGifts kind of catalogues and let him save up for different things - he might enjoy buying a toilet one time and bees or hens another.

Try to review WorldVision, they are for education and the community.
The sponsored child can even send his/her report card to your son and have annual letters too. Ofcourse the letters willbe coursed to World Vision so you will remain private.

Also, dont discount operational cost. This is essential in any organization.

    hi
My wife's school supports a very very poor school/village in kenya. We have invited the headteacher and the deputy head over to the school and they have stayed with us whilst they have visited the school to learn how they might make the education back in their own school in kenya more effective. Two teachers from my wife's school has also visited the school in Kenya. The stories of the poverty and lack of basic amenities are enough to make you weep. My wife's school has fund raised to buy the school a laptop and a camera and the kenyan teachers have taken back clothes, food, resources and whatever we can cram into their suitcases. The name of the school is Othith School in Kenya and seems to be in a region where the various aid charities do not seem to reach. If you were wanting to sponsor a child's education I can send you much more information and photos and can put you in contact with my wife's school for more information etc. I am confident that whatever you donate would go directly to the school/pupil and that, if you wanted, you could have dirrect contact to see the impact that your sponsorship is making.
