Well this may sound like a strange question, but I am thinking about getting a job in some sort of department in the DWP.
Now i know some of you may think, what the bloody hell is she on!:p and I 'm probably thinking i may have drunk too much earlier lol, but ...I'm sure if I was trained I could do the job, and I could probably be a bit more understanding or at least have better customer skills than some of the staff have......
My OH has told me that when he signs on, he would say at least 75% of the staff in our local job centre are under 20! Im not disrespecting youngsters at all, but my OH has been on the end of their social skills, and mis-information, which has caused us a lot of frustration for the past few months.
Was just wondering how I would apply for such a position......? oh and also what your views are?.....lol

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.0 -

OP are you aware the new government is about to decimate the civil service? I'd better not say too much here but the planned level of cuts is going to be massive. Even with voluntary early retirement and short time working the rumour is they are still going to have to cut jobs.
Who knows, the government works in mysterious ways and they might still be recruiting at DWP...on the other hand it is very likely they won't be recruiting anyone at all for a very long time.0 -
I used to work for the DWP. I loved my job but paulwf is right, there are so many cutbacks and I would say lack of training, most posts, as I gather from friends who still work there, are temporary, so you dont get the right skills and training. Of course there are always people that dont mind working like that, ie you look stupid when people ask you a question and you dont know the answer, then you get abused because of that etc - years ago, I would have encouraged you but now I would encourage you to look elsewhere. Its very statistically led and points mean prizes and you just dont have the time to spend with people. I really liked helping people get the right benefits and a job, going the extra mile, but the managers are pretty awful now, promoted for the wrong reasons (in the main of course) sorry bit negative but it isnt very good overall. Most I know still there want to get out!0

Aw thanks for your post, I have random strange ideas about things, I suppose because i have had useless staff on the phone to me, and also quite a few bad mannered ones as well , some staff definately need to be trained better, and have their social skills monitored as well, I thought i could do a better job than some of them lol. I hope that if and when there are cutbacks and these people have to find other employment, unless they are hiding behind a phone line anonymously they will have to give much better customer service !

I quite agree! I spent about 8 weeks on JSA when I finished uni (6 years ago), and the staff at the job centre were miserable, rude, patronising, and very much up their own ar*es!!
I had to go and see prune face every other week, and I could have done her job SO much better than she did it! I will never understand why miserable people work with the public!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
The new libcon govt is about to decimate the civil service, amongst other things
As for the attitude of dwp staff, having claimed benefits for more than 11 years i have never had a problem with anyone at the dwp,but then again i treat them as i expect to be treated, with good manners and respect.0 -

I was brought up to speak to those how you expected to be spoken back to, and I am always polite when on the phone to them. I understand that they have a tough job to do, and obviously do get a lot of grief from people as well. But they should understand how stressful it gets for some people waiting for benefits when they dont have any money coming in.
As they say good manners dont cost anything
The last conversation I had with someone from Pension Credits on friday was very good, and I thanked the lady and said it was really nice to speak to someone that was polite and helpful. I think I made her day as she said that she really appreciated that and it was nice to be acknowledged for giving good advice and help

Hmm, whilst I agree that some staff need additional training do none of you ever stop to consider that they look miserable and their manners are strained because thats the type of person they are facing a lot of the time?0
