Hey guys,
My 2 year old Hotpoint washer has just gone off with a bang!! I've spoken to Comet customer services (I bought the machine from them) who have charged me £30 for an engineer call out and told me to speak to the engineer about the sale of goods act when he comes out. If he can repair it I would have to pay for the labour (£45) and the price of the parts.
Is there any way I can claim the money back from Comet if I go ahead with the repair (if it is fixable), I am lost without my washing machine?
I guess as the damage/breakdown happened after 6 months I would need to prove that the washer was faulty when it was delivered and it is not just down to wear and tear.
Does anybody have any advice please?

I thought Hotpoint had a 5 year parts guarantee - just pay for labour. Maybe worth asking them direct.0

Thanks, I'll try calling them. I still have the receipt but no other info. I wonder what their callout fee is though.....0

2 years? No, not really. It's perfectly possible for a washing machine to fail within 2 years depending on usage. You'd have to prove otherwise - virtually impossible.
As others have said, most washing machines have a 5 year parts guarantee. It's worth checking this out. Usually you just have to have proof of purchase date. You'll still have to pay for labour, of course.
This is why I consider washing machines to have a 5 year lifetime, if it's older than 5 years and something goes wrong, throw it away!0 -
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
The title of your thread was enough to give me a good 2 minutes laughing.
'Comet' and 'help' in the same sentence....rofpml.
No good, I've gone again........

Hi JulesW,
My name’s Matt and I’m from Comet.
It was disappointing to learn of the problems that you are experiencing with your Hotpoint washing machine.
When an appliance develops a faultoutside of the manufacturers guarantee, our normal procedure would be to repair on a chargeable basis.
Based upon the information that you have supplied, I can see you are already aware of the costs involved, however, upon inspection our engineer’s would be able to determine if the fault caused was due to normal fair wear and tear, in these instances repair costs would not be reimbursed.
If you require further assistance, please send me an e-mail at the link below. You will need to register a few details with us in order to be able to send your e-mail in.
