Inside the cap there is a pressure relief spring. Normally the expansion tank is half full of air, so the cooling system can pressurise up to about 15psi and the water then doesn't boil until 125C, so the engine runs efficiently at about 90C to 100C. If the expansion tank is too full, as the water heats up, it can't expand into the air space, so it will blow out of the cap. When it cools, the air space will re-appear. Let the cap off when it's cool to check, and relieve any possible vacuum.
If you start it with the cap off and rev it gently, half the water usually floods out anyway, even when cold if the tank's full.

Ah, okay great stuff.. I will still try and get a little water out, but if not I'll not stress about it :)

It may be worth having the coolent changed at the next service as this needs to be done every few years anyway but other than its only coolent its not as if you put antifreeze into the oil plug!

Do nothing apart from learn from the error and feel slighly relieved that you didn't top up the oil or brake reservoir with it :D:D:D

No harm will have been done. ;)

If you dip an absorbant cloth in there it will soak up the excess.A few dips and squeezes should lower the level.
