Laptop crashes when power cable unplugged

Options
Hi everyone, I was wondering if you clever people could help me.

I have an HP550 laptop which is about 6 months old and still within its warranty.

The battery status shows that the battery is full but when I unplug the cable it crashes after a few minutes. This doesnt happen if the charger is plugged in.

I have scanned for viruses and registry errors (no idea if this would affect it....). Have also checked for windows updates, installed newer versions of all programmes. Cant think what else I can do to fix it apart from call HP.

I just wondered if anyone here might have an idea what was causing it. I've done a few google searches but the responses were a bit technical and varied.

Thanks for any ideas.

I would just contact the place you bought it from.

It is a fault of some kind and you still have plenty of warranty.

    Off completely or suspend/hibernate?

Probably a faulty battery if not.

Off completely. It doesnt show any error messages or anything but when I switch it back on it asks me if I want to start in safe mode.

Start it in safe mode, F8 at boot, if it still does it, probably a battery on it's way out.

If you wan't to rule out software completely, backup all your data, and restore to factory settings.

Batteries are usually excluded from the warranty, but should last more than 6 months.

Yes it does. It works for a few minutes then randomly all the lights go off and its dead. If I try and restart it starts loading up but switches off again almost instantly until I plug it in.

    Battery shows as fully charged.

Will call HP in the morning to see if they will replace whatever needs replacing.

Will be mega annoyed if its a faulty battery and they say its not covered!! I'm too exhausted for a fight!!

Busy backing up data! Thanks for the advice, will try the safe mode thing.

If you've got windows 7, and an external hard disk, use the inbuilt disk imaging, then you can put it back the way it was if it doesn't cure it.

It sounds like a battery problem though, hp and others have had a few battery problems recently (recalls etc), nvidia overheating graphics problems, motherboard problems, not the most reliable brand.
