Why do they do it

I have only been selling items on Ebay for a short while but have had no problems up until now.

I was selling a collection of Asterix books which were won on Monday, buyer emailed to say what did he do next, new buyer only one previous win, told him as stated on my listing cheque or PayPal. I have now received an email from him to say can he pay buy bank transfer, does he think I'm stupid, like i'm going to give out my bank details to anyone. I have emailed to say sorry no, cheque or PayPal, like others on this site have said do people not read the payment options, should be interesting to see what he has to say.

Bank transfer are the best and easiest way of selling stuff on EBay...I would take his hand off (no chargebacks no hassle). Instant clearance if with the same bank as you otherwise about 3 days.

All the information you are giving him is contained on any cheque you send.

    I would suggest you accept.

One other thing the forum search function is a very useful device and would have given you other peoples experiences.

He's put a lot of trust in you by wanting to pay by bank transfer. Remember that if you accept, you won't have to pay paypal fees.

    I would definitely accept it.

What exactly do you think he can do with your bank details (account number and sort code), other that put money into your account?

As a seller, it's safer for you to accept money this way than by cheque (which can bounce at any time in the future, and which you have the hassle of depositing) or PayPal payment (which can be reversed, and which costs you money to receive).

    I love Asterix!

Or more to the point, accept the bank transfer... I've been waiting for months for someone to offer to pay that way. You're lucky...

  • Shariatlanta, it's up to you what payment methods you accept, but I'm curious - would you be willing to pay for something by cheque? If so, you'd be giving out exactly the same details. Bank transfer is my preferred method for taking payment. It's convenient, there are no fees to pay, and no riskof a chargeback.
  • Thanks for the info, didn't realise it's that easy as I've never paid for anything that way, neither have I paid anyone by cheque, always used PayPal. If he did pay buy cheque I wouldn't send the items out until the cheque cleared anyway.

To GabbaGabbahey, don't think ther's any need for sarcasm, we are often told not to give bank details out to anyone so I was just being cautious as he's a new member.

The thing with cheques is they can bounce weeks or months later unfortunately. When I sold on Ebay, bank transfer was my favourite method of payment.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    I love bank transfers!
As already stated above they are quick, the are free of fees, there is no risk of chargeback and you are giving no more details than you would be when sending a cheque infact with a cheque you are giving them your signature too!
I would definatly accept it :)
