Replacing a Toilet Seat......

Options
Hi everyone. May be not the most difficult thing to do in the world of DIY but please bear with me. I am trying to replace my toilet seat but stuck with the problem of having no access to the underneath of the toilet pan (the back of the toilet and pipes are boxed and covered by tiles) and therefore won't be able to tighten or loosen the nuts unless there is another way. Are there any seats that could be fitted from above the pan only and if so where can I get one from? Many thanks in advance for any help.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

I don't think so. If you could get near enough the same seat you could repalce the upper parts and leave the nuts and bolys alone perhaps?

You could try removing a tile, drilling and cutting a whole to gain access - we had this problem with one of our baths - panel had been tiled leaving no access - wasn't too difficult to do.

I take it you have a proper concealed cistern back to the wall type toilet? Not just a regular one that someone has boxed in?

We have a back to the wall set up and you need to get the correct manufacturer's replacement seat, then it can be fitted from above. What make is it, ours is Armitage Shanks? So I can tell you how a Shanks one fits.

Do not worry. This is not a problem. There are many concealed wc systems now where access to the underside of the pan is not possible.

Get the old seat off however you can. If necessary just let the old fixings fall in to the void that you cannot access. You will not need to use them again. You may need to use a hacksaw blade to cut through the old fixings. Be careful.

You can get a new toilet seat and cover from any reputable bathroom stockist that can be fixed from the top only. It works by having an expanding type fixing the fits in the hole in the pan and you screw down until it tightens itself.

I know the Bathstore sell them as do most other specialist bathroom suppliers. You may even find them in B&Q, Homebase, etc, now.

    NO NO NO

Armitage Shanks, Tywfords etc make back to the wall seats, just go in any Plumber Center or good plumbers merchant and ask for a BTW(back to wall) seat, you will be asked which type there are loads.

No need to start hacking off tiles etc, dead easy to fit.

I can't express how grateful I am for all your suggestions and help. I will start looking at the BTW seats (thanks waster & plumb1) and I am certain that this will get things sorted. Cheers.
