Cleaning Carpets - best machine?

I need to clean all of my carpets including the stairs. Coal fire, toddlers and lots of pale coloured carpets do not mix well.
I have a vax classic rapid thing that does an ok job, but it does not have attachments for the stairs. I have two flights of stairs, one with very shallow steps.
Has anyone rented the rug doctor - is it any good?
Has anyone tried the little vax handheld spot cleaner for the stairs?
The rug doctor is about £25 for a one off clean, the spot cleaner is £45.
Any advice and/or suggestions welcomed.

Yes, We rented the Rug Doctor a few months ago and it's very good. Its a bit more fiddly using the tools (for stairs/upholstery) but did an excellent job. You have to buy their own shampoo, but its good stuff. We used about half the recommended amount and it did the job well. We paid about £18 for the day, plus I think about another £8 for the detergent and got it from the Dry Cleaners in Sainsburys (sketchly? Johnson's? can't remember which).
Far better than the Vax I once borrowed, but that was about 15 years ago -they're probably better now.0
