I have a middle of terrace house with rough bumpy render, wood front door and small peaked roof over it. Its all been neglected a bit and the sun has peeled all the paint off something chronic.
Just had quote in to sort it out, came back with this:
Prep rendering, remove loose/flaking debris, fill etc
Prep door/frame, sand, fill etc
Apply Dulux Weathershield stabilising solution to masonry.
Apply Dulux Weathersheild undercoat to door/frame
Apply " " smooth masonry paint
Apply " " gloss to door frame.
Apply tile paint to door step.
I've supplying undercoat and paint for door (had already brought it). Quoted £600. I'm in East London.
Sound reasonable?
Already had the chap in to do other work, which was satisfactory, but a spot rushed. However he did promptly come and spend another day to fix issues, without any qualms (it was his lacky who rushed stuff).

hope this helps.
What about the cost of the paint? The OP is only supplying the paint for the door.0 -
I was told it would be 3 days work, there's a lot of crap to strip off first. Snap of the house on this thread:-

And yep, I'm only supplying paint for door/frame. He's sorting paint for walls and step (all Dulux).0 -

What an idiotic post, what about the drying time of the paint, there are 3 coats on the walls and two on the door, so how can you do it in one day then ?
Three days sounds about right.0 -
I'm suprised he's quoting you for stabiliser, its normally only used on bare rendering prior to painting, and its not cheap.
Did he say why he was going to use stabiliser?0 -
He's using the stabiliser as I say, because most of the existing paint has peeled off the render. There's a lot of bare render on show and a lot of the existing paint will need to be removed. Said it would be pointless painting on top of existing stuff, as it will all just peel off in no time.0

sounds fair
one day prep
two days painting with drying times0 -

Equally surprised over the stabilising solution - its a rough bumby surface, we only tend to use it on flat cement render!!
I would question its need and get a second opinion, I know of one local decorator who charged a client for it, it was un-needed as the paint and render was sound!
Another we think was making a killing by using something like water in its place! - the company I used to work for often had to pick up the pieces after a cowboy had been on a job previously!
A note for anyone dealing with quotes - the cheapest option is not always the best, in fact it seldom is, that said nor is the most expensive! - middle of the road is best! and check his previous works.0 -
Thanks for the concern, however job was done about a month ago now.
He did put the stabilising coat on (wasn't water or anything). He suggested it, because the existing render had been left exposed to the elements for sometime, due to the old paint having all peeled/cracked off. He informed me, without it that was a good chance the finishing coat wouldn't look very great and may not last very well. Either way, jobs all done, looks loads better and happy with work.
