It is also not always possible to use another provider like 18185 for these calls - certainly Sky doesn't allow this, worse luck :(.

Sky do if you use the 0808 FreePhone Access Number. The same one Virgin Media Cable Customers use.;)

There's no additional line rental for 18185, you use the virgin cable phone line. We're lucky that, so far, Virgin allows access to 18185.

not via the short 18185 code though, surely?

I assume via the 0208 or 0800 number, where 18185's charges are very much higher, e.g. no unlimited length calls for the price of connection fee like you get with BT+18185 code.

Thanks for this - I'll see whether I get the use out of it this month £1.50 is fair enough to trial it - I can always cancel after the first month. If it's possible to still use my 18185 account with Virgin and it works out cheaper, I will switch back

What's the secret, I'd like to know that too

I think it is to always take the option of "Changing a package" or "Tell us you're thinking of leaving" - it works for me :D.

One of the reasons I moved from Sky to Virgin was when they first started blocking the use of 18185 - but at the time I could get most of the numbers I needed from https://www.saynoto0870.com - unfortunately once the NHS and government departments start using this ruse to make money out of the population, it becomes much more difficult :(. I have to say I do despise this blatant profiteering, especially where it is usually the sick and elderly having to pay .

Okay - the soap box is vacant again ;):D.
Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever :D

There is a separate number to access 18185 from cable lines 08081703703. Full information and charges are given on the 18185 web site. Costs are higher eg 1p per minute, but still much cheaper than Virgin.

The post is not comparing the use of 18185 with Virgin against BT, but with 18185 against Virgin.

Calls to 0845/0870 which is what this thread is addressing are not very much higher.

In fact calls to 0845 are the same 3p a minute whether you use indirect access via 18185 or one of the alternative numbers.
