For those of us you don't have a crystal ball, what is the question and what is the problem?

hi i am new on here and i dont know how to start a thread so forgive me for hijacking this one..
i have had a basic account with Barclays for 4 years but i havent used it for about 18 months, and last week i pulled my credit file and saw that i had an 'S' marked against in nov last year. i called the bank and they said that i needed to gointo the bank with id as it had now become inactive. i went into the bank and showed the id and was told that they have closed my account and i would now have to apply for anoth one to open. i said that this would then damage my credit file as they would have to do another search, the gil in the bank said that because my account would have been inactive that this would have been damaging my credit file? and although there is only 15p in the account it is maine and they never said they were closing it there questions i have are
    1, can they close it
2, does an inactive accoun that is in credut damange your credit file
3, can they keep the 15p (as to me its not the money its how they have done it)

i hope someone can help me

i am sorry but the system as not pasted the question correctly.
i have had a basic account with barclys for about 4 years because of bad credit, when i started to work for the company i work for now they insisted that i open an account with there bankers and i did not decline this as long as i got my wages .. this meant that my barclays account stayed dormant for about 6 months.
i pulled my credit file the other day and noticed a @s@ aginst the account and when i called the telephone banking that told me to go into my local branch. i did and i was told that the account had been closed becase of inacitinaty...they sugested that i apply to open another account..
i asked waht had happened to the 15p(not that 15p is the issue here) that was in the account and they said it was sent to a holding account and that i need to prove it was mine and the they would send me a cheque.
i asked why they had closed it without telling me and they said that they would have writen to me, they havent because i am very secrity aware and ALL letters i have with any of my details on are if needed answered and then shreaded..
barclays say i shoul apply to open a new account and i said if i do this it will effect my credit file and they should not have cancled it without telling me(i am not dead), the young lady then said that because the account was dormant and not used this would have had a negative effect on my account and they were doing me a favour in closing it????
    3 question i have
1, can they close it like this
2, does a dormant account in credit have a effect neg' on my credit file
3, what happens to the money(i know its only 15p but its the point its not theirs)

  • They can close your account since you have not any transactions on this account for years. They do not make any money of you, in fact, they may have small administration costs to keep your account running.

Why do you need it to remain open if you're not using it?

I am not sure if they are legally allowed to keep the money but I believe they are if it is a low value amount, pennies in your case (not sure about this though). Did you ask at the branch for your 15p and what did they say.

yes i did ask about the 15p they said i need to prove its mine( i couldent do better than to turn up with full id...they still did not want to know...they said because the account had been inactive they could close it after writing to us but the did not write to us...the also said that an inactive account although is in credit always makes you credit file go negative????? i have asked solicitor frined and ifa and they say this is crap...
    so my questions are
1, can they close it although i havend done anything wrong and without telling me
2, does an inactive account in credit affect my credtit file
3, what happens to my 15p

You need to check the terms and conditions of your account, generally saving accounts after 12 month, and current account after 36 month are marked as dormant. Dormant accounts may have an administration charge applied (which is why you need to check the terms and conditions).
I.e. Leave a current account with £1 in it for 6 years, with a £5 a year charge for inactivity. Balance will be -£14.

They cannot close your account only mark it as dormant.

The affect on the file is unknown as each creditor scores you differently. Saving accounts are not shown on file anyway. And inactive accounts do not report so if it is old enough if wont even be on file. if it is on file then the important bit is how much overdraft the account has, this is available credit and reduces your score as you already have credit available.

the account was only a cash account as i had gone banckrupt, when i started a new job the employer asked me to open an account at there bank (co-op) to pay my wages in, that is why i havent used the account for a while,
my credit file has got better as it takes some time.
i was going to use the barclys account to save into and i knew this would help me out long term to build my credit rating again.
i only noticed that they had closed the account when i pulled my credit file last week.
it shows on my file as fine until last november and it then shows (S) which meens suspended.
i have no overdraft and have no late payments on ANY account since the banruptcy 41/2 years ago and i have a creitcard now which again like all of my accounts are fine.
i think this is realy bad if this is effecting my credit file as the lady at the bank says that an inactive account does negitavly effect my file(i have asked a ifa and they have never heard such rubbish).
i am realy now fed up with barclays

Well then just get it reactivated and closed. Dont just whinge at barclays be proactive and contact other agencies if they dont help.

If they refuse, write to the credit reference agency and ask them to remove it, if they refuse goto the ICO.

Your file is going to be terrible until the bankruptcy comes off in 1.5 years anyway.

    hi.
i already asked them to reactivate it and they have said that it has been closed and i would need to apply for another account , i pointed out to tehm that this would effect my credot file and that is when sarcasticlly said that this had alredy happend and hit my credit file because the account was not acctive..
i asked them about this and she said a manager would call me, i told her that although it was only 15p in the account it was not the money (it would be if it was lots) it was the priciple and they have not even writen to me to advise what they were doing....
i also said that i would contact the fso ..i would like to know if they have effected my credit file with this can i hit them for charges..
when i went bankrupt it was a business that i ran and i paid all my staff although a large firm went bust on me,,,,,just one of thoses things but i lost everthing and know the banks are at it again
