The implantologist I refer to has spent £250,000 on courses and additional equipment to qualify.

How much do you think a Hungarian dentist has spent on the equivalent EU accredited course to come up at the same/similar standard?
And what cost difference would the equipment be over a UK practice?

I ask as the price difference for implants can't just be geographical can it?

Why do you think there is an EU 'standard'?

    This happened in Italy http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/dec/16/internationaleducationnews.italy

A dentist with such a qualification couldn't work in the UK, but they do in Italy. And that's not a recent east european addition.

I do not know what qualifications you need in order to put yourself up as an 'implant specialist' in Hungary, but don't believe that just because it's in the E.U. it's the same as here.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

i know property is cheaper etc in Hungary but it's such an astonishing difference, especially when you consider that sometime half a dozen implants are fitted at the same time? Like £1400 (price difference so therotically gross profit) x 6 = £8,400... for a mornings work?
Just trying to make sense of it, that's all :undecided

Some one having that number of implants will have visits before to treatment plan, x ray, possibly ct scan , impressions sent away to a lab for temporaries , and possibly surgical stents made. When they come in to have that many implants placed they have one surgeon, one sedationist and three nurses present. They will then come in over the next few months to check healing and possibly have more temporaries made. Then after 3 to 6 months they will have more long appointments to have implants exposed and impressions taken and definative restorations made. That is the minimum if nothing is too complicated ie you need bone grafts etc. That represents many many hours of surgical and laboratory time.

I work in a very cheap part of the world where property costs and wages are low ,I don't do implants so have not had to invest in the extra equipment and training.Just to run one room(surgery ) in the building , before I make any money costs £150 an hour . In the UK we are regulated up to the eyeballs everything is inspected and checked and as dental equipment is imported in dental equipment / material costs have gone up this year by 10 to 15 per cent.

I don't do implants but to give you an idea a complete implant set ie not the equipment but just the implants themselves in every size for one system only is £10,000.

I had 3 implants in January and my implantologist is a very experienced oral surgeon. He does bone grafts and sinus lifts and has over 20 years experience with implants and trained many dentists when he worked in a hospital. He now works in a few different dental practices in North London doing nothing but placing implants.

The cost was £1500 per implant

Thank you brookjack, I suppose the bottom line is how many implants are fitted on a 'conveyor belt' as such. If a dentist was fitting say 4 at a time on 3 patients a day then i'd say that even with the costs you mention £1500 each would be too much, I can see how they can do it abroad for £600 - 700 as it seems that they do it almost exclusively of other work now. Perhaps the implant work subsidises the cost of the other work like regular fillings.
  • all very interesting posts about this subject, I found a clinic in Cornwall of all places! Had a missing upper front tooth, all completed with a crown for under £1300.00, and it looks great, no longer a toothless hag :)
they are called dentalcareplus, opened another branch near London this year, anyone wants to give them a go its dentalcareplus.org.uk, their receptionist Ali is really nice too!!
