Is price your sole consideration, or does operator skill/experience come into it?

That site looks good - but that just shows they have a good web designer.

I don't like the way there are no named dentists on the site (other than the 2 founders)

    ? High staff turnover?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    I want a happy medium.

I was quoted this morning from the person my dentist recommended that it would be"starting at £2400" and I would like to pay less. I want to pay less as I am sure there must be reputable companies that charge more competetive rates.

I am getting a tooth implant because I have perfect teeth except for this 1 gap and its driving me to distraction - so in the end I will pay whatever.

My thinking is that most dentists must be bright and professional so in the main most implanatologists must be competent. I have to admit the area is very opaque for a beginner and my head hurts doing research.

I am glad you answered as I read some of your posts and was impressed.
I dont want his thread to degenerate into dentistry is a "conspiracy against laity" diatribe but at the same time I wasnt to source a safe/cheap implant.

My other big issue. Is which brand do you pick?
I honestly havent a clue except to assume the ones quoted dearer must be better but in what way.

Any help form anyone would be great.

I have a porcelain crown on a post. I've had a couple of abscesses on it & root canal surgery. Apparently the post is short (or is it broken) inside & if they do root canal again it might break.

So an implant is my next step.

I'm a bit worried they take your crown (or whatever out) prep your mouth & then you have to go off & come back at a later date (when healing has started or implant is made or whatever).

Is their a gap when you might be toothless during the implant process?

You can have the gap filled durng the healing phase but HOW you fill it depends on your situation and what you want. Bear in mind the more complex the method the more the overal cost will be.

re cheaper implants - my best friend does them and he said it is prohibitively expensive for him to charge less than 1800. That BARELY covers his overheads for the treatment. These arent cheap options ... but they last in a good well maintained mouth with careful case selection pre op.

"most implanatologists must be competent" - you would think so wouldnt you .........

my advice is to get it done RIGHT rather than cheaply. Training to place implants can range from a weekend course to a year or so organised training pathway. As someone who is hopefully bright and professional I would get recommendations - start with your own dentist and have it done properly. If this implant lasts you 20+ years trouble free the initial costs become a distant memory

How long is the gap period?

    Typically of course.

depends entirely on the individual and the views of the practitioner. I would expect in the region of 3 months though, maybe more.

The implantologist I refer to has spent £250,000 on courses and additional equipment to qualify.

The questions I would ask are how many implants do they do in a week /month and what their success rate is. I wouldn't get hung up on what system they use ... the best implantologists will use many as different situations need different implants.

I would make sure there is a system for checking and maintainance of the implant... your oral hygiene will need to be meticulous, more so than around the rest of your teeth and needless to say many implantologists will not work on a smoker since success rates are much lower.

Medicine, surgery, dentistry are places where cost cutting should not be the over riding concern. You should find an implant specialist by recommendation not in the yellow pages because as the most important thing is to find someone you trust who will do the right (not the cheapest) thing for you.

I have a final appointment later today to have the crown fitted to my new implant ( upper first molar).

The process began with assessment in November last year, with the implant being put in in January the process has taken about 5 months for this tooth, which is quite large in this position. I had the original tooth removed in Autumn 2009. It was a large tooth and the gap was just about visible when I smiled broadly, also the tooth behind had a large dark filling so the overall effect was a "black hole!" I was OK leaving the gap for the duration.

    It has cost me £1200:D.

Before anyone gets too excited, let me explain. My own trusted and experienced dentist has been training in doing implants. When I initially discussed the implant, one of the options I was offered was to be one of his training patients at half the usual price. After due consideration (original thread [URL="http://https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1975425) and the fact that it was a single back tooth and expected to be straightforward, I decided to proceed. All the assessments and treatment sessions were carried out in the presence of the mentor.

Everything has gone very smoothly and I have been very satisfied with the process. That said, I wouldn't have gone out seeking this option, I consider myself fortunate that I was in the right place at the right time to take up this option from my own dentist.

It is worth being aware that additional work can be required eg bone augmentation, which can push up the basic cost.

I don't suppose he would be prepared to break that down and put it up on here would he?
I ask as I can't fathom why a Hungarian dentist would state (might be up to 2 years old the statement so prices would be a bit out of current going rate) that they do implants for £400 as opposed to a UK dentists £1800, and that of the £400 they make £100 profit?
I mean, i know property is cheaper etc in Hungary but it's such an astonishing difference, especially when you consider that sometime half a dozen implants are fitted at the same time? Like £1400 (price difference so therotically gross profit) x 6 = £8,400... for a mornings work?
Just trying to make sense of it, that's all :undecided
