Wharfedale DVDR24HD250 DVD recorder not turning on

I have a Wharfedale DVDR24HD250 DVD recorder with a 250GB hard disk drive which is nearly 2 years old.
Yesterday while recording it was making a funny noise then switched off. When i turn it on the hard drive (i believe) makes a whirling noise for a few seconds then switches off. Now when i press the on/off button nothing happens. The on/off button on the unit is lit and the display panel is blank.
I unplugged it from the mains last night hoping that it will sort itself out. Tried it tonight and no luck
Can it be the hard drive failure?
I bought the unit brand new for less than £90 when it was on offer. A decent unit now costs above £150. Was wondering if i can repair it easily.
There is a DVD in the unit. Any idea on how to take it out? There is no small hole like on a computer where you can push in a paperclip/pin to open the tray.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi, unplug it from the mains supply, remove the top cover and you should be able to easily remove the dvd. Taking into account the purchase price I would say that the unit is not economically repairable unless you can do it yourself. ( By buying and replacing the hard drive yourself.)0

You can't expect much more of a wharfedale product -you have probably done far better than most.0

Another thing to try after doing as suggested is:
Press the HDMI button twice when on.
I have a similar model. How the hell do you burn to dvd recorded progs from hd? It either says not enough space on dvd or nothing happens. The instructions are terrible.0 -
will give the HDMI button a go tonight.
Have not recorded much onto DVD from HD. Have you checked the recording speed?Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems
