  • As others have said Gosforth itself is expensive to live in. Nearby is Jesmond and Heaton, which are both popular with students. Jesmond more so and very expensive but Heaton might be an option.

I use the metro to commute in to Heaton from Gateshead. Yes it's south of the river but it really doesn't add anything to your commute if you are using public transport, particularly the metro. I've always found Newcastle's public transport very good. He would be able to afford a lot more in Low Fell that most of the areas that are right next to Gosforth and would still have a 30-45 minute commute (depending how close work is to the metro).

A lot of the areas near Gosforth are going to be Tyneside flats on a budget of £500 p/m. Another poster has said they are awful but they are all I've lived in up here and I've never had any problems.

Cramlington is a lot further out. However, the buses from Cramlington do stop on Gosforth High Street so maybe an option. It's 25 minutes on the bus when there isn't traffic though so don't know how long it would take in rush hour.

Kingston Park not bad either and on the metro.

It really depends how long your brother is prepared to spend commuting and what he expects in a home.
  • Oh, and try upmystreet.com for information about the different areas suggested including schools.

:) thank you all for your help. My bro and family have managed to rent a place in Redfarm (i think thats the name, is it near kingston park?? )
They found a 2 bed flat with a communal quadrangle of grass/courtyard idea. Sounds really quirky and am going down next weekend for a nosey.
All your help has been invaluable and once this 6 month lease is up, they will be looking to buy down there so they have 6 months to get a feel for decent areas/travelling time etc etc.
    Thanks once again :)
