Acers are acid loving plants, so check if you can obtain ericaceous soil to pot it up in (or out with!). Ericaceous compost has no lime in it. Watch out if you put stones around your acid loving plant - make sure they're not limestone (as I did in the past !)

Also, there are several varities of feed out there that are specifically for acid lovers, like Azaleas, Magnolias, most Conifers and heathers to name a few. So, you can feed them with that - I use Miracle Grow, but that's just one of many on the shelves when you look. If you buy compost, you can top-dress your acers if they're in a pot, and then follow on with the liquid feed.

I love Acers - the trouble is I have too many. And I still bought a new one on Wednesday ;)

I have the same problem. I bought three different Acer's a few weeks ago. Two, in the ground, are growing beautifully but the one in the pot (similar one to the red one pictured) isn't doing so well. It has looked fine until tonight. I water it every day but was wondering if covering the soil in slate was a mistake? Should I leave it or clear it free of slate? I will also be moving it so partial shade.

could be scorching from the bright sunshine. the dark leaved acers especially prefer to be shaded from the hottest sun.

Thanks. Parts of it look nice and healthy but a few parts have completely dried and shrivelled over night. Would it be wise to move it out of the pot to a shaded area? (partial shade anyway) or would I kill it by moving it?

partial shade should be fine...if the pot is too heavy to move with the acer in it ,its ok to dig the tree out with as much rootball as possible, as long as it is replanted quickly in the new position and given plenty of water. it will drop the scorched leaves but should regrow new ones fairly quickly.

Thanks squack. I have replanted in the ground. I'll see how it goes.
