No debts ever, good job, clean nose... poor credit rating?

My partner is 8 months pregnant, she has a good job, she lives in my house with me...she went online to buy a contract phone... no chance, poor credit rating apparently! told to go in to shop.

we went in to the high street shop, they said you have poor credit rating!
told to go on-line to check credit rating.

did this poor credit rating, on electorial register etc, no debits, no bad credit, blah blah...

how the heck can she get a mobile phone contract?

i get the feeling if she had a credit card, a loan, a debt or on the dole, she might get a contract becasue they would say she is a 'safe' risk.

BUT, because she has never had a morgage, had a credit card, no black marks they assume she is a bloody risk?

i rekon 2 years ago if she had walked in to a bank and asked for a £100k mortgage she would have got one no questions aked!

Any ideas - ones without having to get credit card, debts etc?

Without existing credit some lenders are cautious about lending to you - they don't know if you'll go crazy with it or not.

You need to read the article and other threads on building your credit rating - start with your own bank as they at least have some background on you.

For the record, if she did have those other debts, she'd only be seen as a safe risk if her behaviour showed no missed payments and an ability to handle credit facilities ;)

Aside from that, no easy answers. You presumably have a couple of extra searches showing on your credit report so more applications might not be a good idea - you've checked your credit report I assume?
