cahoot telephone calls ,dual standards

I received a telephone call ,stating this is your internet bank ,I would not receive the call without confirmation of who I was speaking to ,the caller would not disclose their identity without confiming my name. Further investigation revealed that it was CAHOOT calling,I complained about the intrusive call and was informed that it was because of the Data protection act and they could not confirm their identity to a third party.They then proceeded to send me a letter confiming their stance ,with CAHOOT WRITTEN ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE LETTER.
This makes a mockery of their whole procedures,they could not disclose on the phone, causing worry and concern ,because of recent scam calls ,but are sending out documentation,revealing to all all in the household that they are banking with CAHOOT,and stating that is because of the Data protection act

Not really. The problem is the vague wording used within the Data Protection Act. For example they have to ensure all data is surrounded by "proper" security.
Define "proper".
It's fairly standard procedure for businesses not to divulge "sensitive" information over the phone but to be perfectly happy to do so in writing.
Again, "sensitive" information is a term used by the DPA, what would you consider "sensitive" is quite likely different from what the law would do.
You could argue that by simply receiving a call from Cahoot and them asking for you by name that they are in breach of the DPA, wonder what the person on the other end of the phone would say to that?

I have just opened a savings account with Cahoot, and I phoned them up with a question, and they surprised me by knowing exactly who I was from caller ID from the phone number I was calling from. I was surprised at that, but I guess the technology is there for that...Indecision is the key to flexibility
