Benefits and mortgage

Hi, I am a foster carer and I claim income support so I get help with my mortgage payments. I will probably want to move house in the near future and I was wondering...

If I buy a more expensive house with bigger mortgage repayments would they pay the new amount or would they say I shouldn't have moved and only pay what they are paying now?

As you have ignored my post on the other thread, I'll copy it over.

No, unless you have a specific need, the DWP will not pay any increase in your mortgage. A specific need would be severe overcrowding (you would not be allowed to foster if this was the case) or a medical need that cannot be overcome by adaptations to your current property.

I would also be surprised if your lender allowed you to increase your liabilities whilst dependent on benefits.
    Gone ... or have I?

I didn't ignore it, I started this thread before you posted your reply. I just came to delete this one after thanking you for your advice, maybe I shouldn't have bothered.

ktululady, not wanting to start an arguement but I think your remark towards dmg24 was uncalled for. dmg, thank you for taking the trouble of taking time to give valuable advice.

I have looked into this (went to CAB) as I have put my house up for sale as I need to move closer to family because of my care needs and also need a bungalow. They say I have a strong case (after getting a specialist in the field to look into it) and also my GP supports my move and has told me to let her know if she can do anything to help.

The bungalow I am hoping to buy is around £15,000 more than I will get for my house. My mortgage lender is willing to add this to my mortgage, as I have a large equity (even after the house price drop) but I won't find out whether they will increase help with mortgage interest payments until I actually move, which my GP thought was ridiculous.

Not wishing to sound rude but haven't you been listening to the coalition government's feelings towards those who take from the system but put nothing back.

Why do you think the tax payer is obliged to buy you a house? Can't you buy one yourself?

Working people have to cut their cloth to fit.. you might be wearing the same outfit shortly :T

I don't want to argue either, you obviously you think its ok for him to accuse me of ignoring his post. I came here for friendly advice, not to have someone imply I am ignorant.

And I did thank him for his advice in the other thread.

I would like a bigger house with an extra bedroom so I can help more foster children. I have a degree in computing and I could get a job easily but I decided to do something more worthwhile. I am looking after very difficult foster children who need me at home so I am unable to go to work.

I don't think anyone is obliged to buy me a house, but I am not stupid enough to turn down any financial help I can get. With the hours I put into looking after these children, the payments I get are nowhere near minimum wage so maybe that is why the government allows me to claim benefits and get help with my mortgage payments.

The government gives me this help as they think I give something good by looking after these children that no-one else wants.

    Could you do it?
