I always cancel mine, and then pay after if it is warranted.
Cheeky sods aren't they!!
Hope you get it back ok0 -
For electricity there is always a supplier supplying a property regardless if it is occupied or not and the supplier will want paying for everything that has been used. If the property is rented then when you move out and no one is moving in the account should be transferred into the landlords name. If this does not happen anything used in between will end up on someones bill.
Also if there is a change of supplier it is the new customer how provides the change reading and any party (either supplier or customer) can dispute the reading used up to 12 months after the change of supplier date. Therefore whenever you move or change supplier you should keep the bills concerned for about 14-18 months.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Sadly British Gas seem to be behaving like robbers these days.
My very elderly father lives alone, has all the radiators turned off except the one in the living room; has no radiator in the kitchen or loo.
Last quarter his bill was nearly £600. The preceding bills have been astronomical for a while.
I have called and called BG to say I think there is a problem somewhere, can they help.
They are totally and utterly disinterested.
Finally middle of April I got his meter changed for a new one.
Then blow me down the next bill is for over £700!!!
I have called them to object, they have relooked and decided it was wrong and have now reduced it to a mere £489.:(
No explanation on how suddenly they can see the bill is 'wrong'.
I have called again and told them I am still not satisfied and ONLY after having to become acid with the frontline staff did I finally get to speak to a 'manager'.
She is now looking into it.
Progress anyway.
I am sure the old meter was faulty and my father has been fleeced for about 3 years.
There doesn't seem to be a straightforward procedure for appealing.
I'm not being funny but I am very busy at work, have my own life and family and just do not have the time to spend time with a lonely old man AND have to spend hours and hours fighting these companies.
He has given up and does nothing for himself.
British Gas? Bah! But they're not the only ones who make life difficult and simply don't care.
Makes you laugh when the front line staff have titles like 'customer SERVICE'. What a joke.
They wouldn't know service if it jumped up and bit them.
Rant over but sympathies to the OP.:o0 -

I expect years ago your father was busy with a family as well!0 -
Suppliers will only 'correct' bills due to meter issues (rare) from the date that you log with the supplier that you suspect there is an issue.
The most common reasonfor high bills is either (1) catch up bills because previous bills have been estimates and/or (2) because the meter is logged as imperial instead of metric.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

get the credit card bill, show them that you paid over £400 a year ago, if they are still demanding more why didnt they ask for it then,0

He was only ever busy with his own interests.
I take your point however and realised it sounded bad but I spend hours and hours supporting him and he never says thanks, never appreciates only criticises and if it clarifies, I am the ONLY one in the family left in contact with him becaause of how he treats people.
Even his own sister, who is a lovely lovely lady doesn't bother any more as being in contact with him is just too stressful.
So I take your comment in the spirit I believe it was intended but I promise it isn't how it probably sounded.:o0 -

Cardew, if you are going to quote someone at least include the whole quote and not just part of it. Flossy said she doesn't have time to spend time with her dad AND fighting these companies.:j little fire cracker born 5th November 2012 :j0
