Visa Debit charges

I know this is supposed to be a credit card board but I can't decide on a better place to post about debit cards.
I've just been told in M&S whilst buy foreign currency that I'll be charged by my bank for the transaction as I used a Visa Debit.
Has anyone had this happen and also can anyone see the rate on the NatWest website because I can't find anything to do with debit cards.
It's an absolute joke that I am charged for paying on my debit card because it's now Visa rather than Maestro. The reason I have a Visa Debit is because my card was skimmed in Feb and I was re-issued with a Visa Debit. My partner has recently been sent a letter explaining she'll now be getting a Visa Debit (we don't share an account) so neither of us actually have any choice over using it.
