    Part of the Furniture
There is stores in the USA that sells cricket modems.

Ok, but if you have to sign up for a plan online, you're still going to run into the issue of paying with a non-US address card like Luci had with the Virgin dongle, aren't you?

Though perhaps like some US sites you can get payment processed even though you can't technically enter a UK address.

Luci - I agree that their site doesn't make it too clear...I'm guessing (could be wrong) that it's a monthly payment thing which you can cancel at anytime (with some sort of notice, I would presume)...maybe?

Anyway, it seems to have some mixed reviews...I think I may pass.

Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

We have just returned from a volcano-extended stay of the US. We found that the following hotel chains had free wi-fi:
Holiday Inn (Express and Holiday Inn)
Residence Inn (but sometimes wifi in lobby, hard wired in rooms)
    Country Inn and Suites
    Hampton Inn
    Courtyard by Marriott

We had to pay in Hilton Chains - Hilton, Embassy Suites
and this was $9.99 a day or $21.95/3 days

So it may not be as difficult as you think to get free wi-fi. Worth checking the website for the hotel you stay in. Quite often it was more expensive in the more expensive hotels! Even so, it was free wi-fi in the lobby.

I can recommend taking an iPod touch - great for emails, Facebook etc with the free wifi.
