Hi,
Sorry if this question has been asked over and over, but my OH is in training to be in the Royal Marines, and we're getting married in August so that we can live together. He's not sure where we're to be based yet, as he hasn't been told (as a rule they tend to tell the lads where they will be based about 2/3 weeks before they pass out of training...) but does anyone know what sort of accomodation we will get? Also - what sort of things will we need? Trying to budget for us moving out (aswell as the wedding) is hard as I don't know what we've got to budget for!!!
This may be a little bit of a long shot, but thought it was worth a try! If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!

You will need your own fridge/freezer, washing machine and other electrical stuff. All the houses have cookers in so you don't need to worry about that.
Other than that you can go full/part or non furnished. They will provide your furniture at an addional cost so things like sofas, chairs, dinig table and chairs, beds, bookcases, dressing tables etc etc. You can also have a get me in pack with essentials like cutlery etc but most people have all that anyway.
Depending on where you go will depend on your house. As a couple if you stay in the UK (no idea where marines are generally based sorry!) You will probably get a 2 bed house or you might luck out and get a 3 bed depending on area and availability. Hth
We just had the basics when we got married, took the army furniture and upgraded to our own as we went along.0 -

Thanks - that's basically what I thought we would need to be honest! At how much extra on top of your rent can you get the sofa's, dining tables etc? I think for the best part of it, we will be able to get all our cutlery and extra little bits and bobs sorted just before we move in, that won't be a problem!
Getting our own as we go along is basically what we want to do anyway. I don't really want to buy too much when we will be moving here, there and everywhere all the time! It seems too much hassle for what it's worth to buy everything to fill the house, although I would like to make the house feel like a home with the smaller, personal touches.Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -
I've no idea what the current rates are if you have furniture sorry. Hopefully someone else will know. Its not much though0

Furniture isn 't great, but is perfectly OK for when you start out. We did this and slowly bought stuff. Then we had 2 yrs in Cyprus and you only get army furniture. Cost isn't much from what I remember, and it can depend on how much you have - I'd go for it all and get things removed as and when you need them. Best of luckMe, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
i am currently paying £64 a m onth for an unfurnished married quarter. I dont have kids so its just a 2 up 2 down kind of house, but i have got a massive garden!
the best thing to do is to start looking at freecycle website and pick up stuff on there for free, its all you need you to get started and like others have said, you can replace as you go along. Also might be better to ask parents friends either for vouchers for the wedding for say Argos or Ikea or the actual gifts you needWins so Far: 21" lcd monitor, 6 day all expenses paid holiday to China, 8800GTX gfx card, 2x Panasonic cameras, 12 cups and Loads of Twix's, Coffee Lovers Hamper - Wild bean cafe. TomTom (upto value of £200) Aviva Car Insurance0 -
Hey guys,
Thanks for all your replies, they've all been helpful!
Hubby to be is going to speak to the welfare officer soon and then try and find out a bit more information as to what we will and won't get. Any help from you guys is always a massive help too :-)
Looking forward to moving out, I just don't want to get caught short of anything!!Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -
If you're not already it may be worth you joining RNCom, this is a website designed for family and friends of those serving with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Once registered as a member you have access to an online community via forums very much like those found here. The beauty about RNCom is that every unit has it's own forum, so whilst your OH is training with the Marines you'll find other family members in the same situation. Their will be people who can help point you in the right direction.
Once you know which Commando unit he'll join you could then use their forum as a way to gain information (and possibly friends too) for the area you'll move to. There will be other wives, girlfriends, mums, dads and more who'll be able to help.0 -

thank you so much!! I have been trying my hardest to remember what this website was from when we went to the family day ages ago! Hubby to be will love you - I have been getting him to try and find our what this website was since we were there (that was Sept - a lot of nagging hehe).
Thanks again - this will be a massive help. I can let all his family know about this now too.Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -
