Hmm..it seems I CAN control myself!!!

Hi folks - the lovely response I received from you guys yesterday has really spurred me on to stop my downward spiral of binge eating/compulsive spending. I know it's going to be really hard but I have had a really good first day!

I went shopping with my mum - usually an opportunity for me to buy us lots of treats - but today I only got us a little custard slice each and they were from the reduced section! Very tasty still.

Also, about half an hour ago, I was sat in front of New Adventures of Superman (shut up...) and found myself suggesting a McDonalds to my husband. I gave him a tenner of my housekeeping (he has no money for himself because he gives any spare to me for housekeeping, bless him) and he was just stepping out the door when I remembered you lot and said, "Stop!". He looked at me like I was mad because I never do that! Anyway, the tenner is now tucked safely back in my purse and I have cleaned my teeth and drunk a pint of water (not quite the same as a cheeseburger) and am now sat here feeling all smug.

Like I said, I know it isn't going to be an easy ride because I have got a lot of issues I am dealing with but I'm so thankful that I have found such a supportive forum because I really feel like I can do this now.

Thanks again guys - you are the best!!! :j

Great stuff. Keep reinforcing the pleasure/smugness of self control. It's also effective to keep a negative picture in your mind. So when someone says "McDonalds" don't think of taste etc, think of lard, grease, badly paid staff etc. Works really well. The other thing is that often once you stop yourself then the moment passes and 5 minutes later you think "I didn't really want one actually".
    Happy chappy

It's a greater feeling than any takeaway could ever give, to feel like you're actually in control.

Just think that £10 that you would've spent now means your overdraft is technically only £290 (or was it £200 to start with, I've forgotten! sorry :( )
    or £190!!

Put that £10 somewhere safe out of your purse, out of sight out of mind, I've got a little chicken pot that has all my out of sight money in it :)

That's brilliant! You come across as an intelligent, funny person and I'm sure that now that you have faced up to the problem, you will be able to find ways to overcome it.

Have you ever read Paul McKenna's book 'I can make you thin'? It isn't a diet, it is about learning to recognise your body's signals telling you when you are hungry and when you are eating for some other reason. I'm not very good at the techniques that he teaches, but there is a lot of common sense in what he says. Its worth looking at if you can get it from the library.

Great stuff......but I'm left with the nagging thought that you've not had any dinner tonight?

    Or am I wrong?

  • I've got a tip for you - buy a small piece of ribbon from a fabric or hobby shop (no more than 1 metre) in a colour you adore. Then tie is round you writing hand (left or right) each time you go to reach for a snack or another piece of food you'll remember us all and hopefully will say no thanks to yourself! It works for me.
    Just trying to be me.....

What a lovely idea - an MSE 'friendship' bracelet! I hope that one catches on :)

LavenderLily, I've just read your thread from yesterday. Well done for starting to turn the tide :)

    :T :T :T Top effort girl - and isn't a little victory like that a great feeling?

You could try my fave trick too.....when you pick up something to buy, just stop for a second, look at it and say to yourself "Do I really NEED this, or do I just WANT it?" If it's just want, I stick it back on the shelf!

Well done and keep it up - we're all rooting for you!
