The house we want to buy is not in a chain but the sellers haven't found the house they want yet(they are willing to go into temp accom if necessary)
If we decided to move at their convenience (within reason), it would also give us time to get extra cash for the few house improvements we want to do in the future so for us it's a win-win.
However, we don't want to delay as they could drop out for whatever reason, BUT could we exchange within a short time and then complete a few months later? What are the implications of this? Could they then still back out?
Any advice would be appreciated

That's exactly what we did! We exchanged on our purchase 3 months ago, but as the sellers are running a B&B from the house, they wanted time to run their business down, and they wanted to cash in on the summer holiday season.
We just exchanged on our sale today :j - see my thread about it - and are all set to complete on 1st September, just in time for me to go back to work (I teach)
Our sellers were going to go into rented accomodation, but they have actually found somewhere, so it's all falling into place. I think as long as you both want the same thing, and you let your solicitor know your reasons, there isn't a problem.0
