Reclaiming Bank charges - very small amounts

Options
I've generally managed my current account quite well - I have had the occasional charge in the past, but always complain, and as far as I can recall, I had all of the charges refunded there and then, with the exception of one £25 charge in late 2004.

I've just sent off a very basic, polite letter, asking, in view of my years of loyal custom, would they consider a refund of any charges incurred over the past 6 years.

Really its not worth getting involved in legal disputes over such a small amount, so if they say no, that will probably be the end of it.

Has anybody had success with such a small amount?

  • I claimed £32 off Natwest (who I work for) and £50 off Alliance and Leicester for myself (the only two charges I've ever paid, simple mistakes, I intended to put my A&L account and Natwest credit cards up to their limits before paying interest on credit to pay for my holiday and inadvertently slipped over the limits, by less than £3 each time)

If you only ask nicely and don't pursue I'd guess they'll say no, I was determined on principle to get it back as the charges are illegal.

I have also claimed successfully for a friend for larger amounts.

I phoned alliance and leicester to ask why i'd paid interest in my credit card (it was only £6 but i'd paid my bill on time). the girl said no problem i'll just refund that for you. That wasn't even why i phoned i wasn't going to bother asknig for just over a fiver back but as she offered i was more than happy to have it back.
it turned out it was interest from the month before and i had to pay it twice but i still got it back

On a similar note, we have been charged a £5 authorised overdraft charge from A&L a few times which is apparently a monthly charge if we go overdrawn at any time during the month, even though the overdraft is authorised. I included these £5 charges on my complaint letter about their credit card charges. They have replied saying that the law changes only apply to credit card charges not bank charges. Is this correct?
    Thanks in advance!!

No its not correct, they apply to catalogue, bank charges and anyone else who is making a profit from these charges. The companies are not declaring how much it costs send out letters etc, and won't do so, as they are not allow to profit from them.

Sorry, I have just read you said AUTHORISED overdaft - its a different thing - I think. Its when they charged you for going into an UNauthorised overdraft.:o

Just to clarify charges are unlawful not illegal:)
