Super High Electric Bills

Hello:hello:
I am hoping for a little advice.

I recently moved into my 1st home (2 bed Semi)

We had brand new storage heaters fitted and changed to economy 7 tarrif with EDF.

Because Id never had electric before they put me on £33 a month Direct Debit as an estimate.

When the 1st quarterly bill came through at £353.16 I was shocked.

So I turned 2 heaters off and the other 2 down, checked the timing switches, turned all my halogen lights off and bought 1 lamp for each room with energy saving lightbulbs and got an OWL meter.
Also it is just me and my boyfriend living in the house and we are at work 5 days a week!

Then I got the next bill and it was more!!! I cant understand how this can be?!?
£471 this time!

I phoned EDF and they asked me to do a reading over the phone. The man then says, "Yep thats the same, so its your problem"

I now owe them £719.84.

Any ideas of what to do?

Oh and the OWL monitor estimates my bills at £150 a quarter.

any help appreciated :)

£33 for all electric house is very low its more like it will be double or triple that

Have you got you meter readings handy?

Also electric is more expensive than gas to heat your home. Also check to see you are on economy 7 properly

    Heres the latest bill:
    [(a)Previous] [(b)Latest] / [(c)Units] / [(d)Unit Split]/ [(e)Pence] / [(f)Charges]
    Day| [(a)2682 A] [(b)6544 A] / [(c) 3862]/ [(d)first 252] at [(e)17.66p]/ £44.50
    ......................................... .[(d)next 3610] at [(e)11.05p] [(f)£398.91]

    Night [(a)921 A] [(b)1453 A] / [(c)532] / [(d)532] at [(e)5.34p] [(f)£28.82]

    Total Before VAT £471.82

I realise £33 is a bit low, it was their suggestion and I'd never had an electric bill before so I just went with it, maybe that was a little ignorant of me.

You seem to be using most of you electricity during the day.
How is your water heated, and is this switched on 24/7
Are you running other high consumption appliances during the day, Tumble Drier/Dish Washer washing machine, room heaters?
Are your storage heaters on a separate circuit and controlled by a radio teleswitch?

Just a thought, is the meter being read correctly, its possible that the day and night readings have been transposed.

Your 3862 Kwh use for the last quarter equates to 42 kwh/day, dividing that by 7 gives you just over 6 Kw which would be what two or three storage heaters would use.

Thats what I cant make out, Ive even started to think what if next door have wired thier house into mine...although they are elderly!

The water is an emmerssion (i hope thats how u spell it) new in 2008, so energy efficient, and comes on at 5-6.

Normally Im not here, but Im sick today so right now, I have on :
    Fridge/Freezer, TV,Laptop Charger,Alarm Clock.

OWL meter says 0.235 KW/H or 2.4 pence an hour.

I dont even drink tea to use the kettle!

and yeah the heaters are wired into a seperate fuse box with a fancy timer, it has a red light when they are on and you can hear it click on and off..sooo i think thats all fine?!
  • Wooooo!!!

    I think I've cracked it!

I think they've got my rates the wrong way round!

Ive been watching the meter like a hawk all day!

    Lets see what they say....*Ring-Ring*

Thats what it looks like to me, BTW when you have it sorted it would be best to run your immersion during the E7 hours, with a short boost during the day.
