do i have to just except talk talks new prices??

i signed up for 18 month contract with tiscali in Nov and then despite having no contact from talk talk even tho they said they had sent me a letter have been changed over to a tariff of 18.48 rather than 14.99 a month, I asked to leave or be charged the 14.99 a month i was when i was with tiscali but was informed this couldnt happen by a talk talk member of staff on the phone, and that i was still contracted to them till may next year, Surely they cant just increase the price and im still in the same contract because the contract has been broke by talk talk! Any advice anyone???

AFAICR you don't have to accept a new contract from TT.

  • Does your contract allow for price increases. It probably does.
Contracts also normally allow them to pass you off to another provider,

I thought the price increases had to be due to external factors, like the VAT lowering and rise. Just because a contract says, "we reserve the right to change our price at any time by any amount" doesn't mean its legally enforceable because you signed it. Whether the law allows for a little wiggle room is another matter.

A topic very similar to this [unilateral price rise/package change] was when Orange tried to exclude 0845 from their free minutes [or something like that]. This allowed thousands of people to cancel their contract [and keep the phone]......some people had only just taken out a 24 mth contract and they were able to walk away from it.

So many people became aware of the 'loophole' that Orange actually CANCELLED the proposed rise/change....the power of t'internet yet again!!!

Its certainly amusing, they must surely be aware of the law and try to blag it.

I think they did have a get out and sent letter or emails out IIRC , how long have you been with Talk Talk now ?

    This isnt the same though.
Orange where changing the service. If talk talk were changing limits or speeds downwards then this would apply.

So are you saying the OP is stuffed, and can't use a unilateral price increase as a reason to get out of the contract???

Contracts for internet always tend to have a term for price increases. They would need to show the price increase was unreasonable or outwith the terms which about £2 isnt.

Depends on how you look at it.

In absolute terms it may not be a lot, but it's a £3.49 increase on £14.99, which by my reckoning is a 23% price hike....and I'd call that a lot!!
