Does anybody know whether you are commiting an offence if you board a train without a ticket or is it ok to purchase one on the train?

Well here's a starting point...2. Requirement to hold a ticket
Before you travel you must have a ticket or other authority to travel which is valid for the train(s) you intend to use and for the journey you intend to make.
That quote is further qualified in The National Rail Conditions of Carriage0 -
What about unmanned stations?0

If the station doesn't have a ticket machine then no of course not. Its my understanding that if the station has ticket machines then you can be charge full fair. I could be wrong.0

Our local station is frequently unmanned - so we either buy on the train, or at Manc Piccadilly when we arrive (if a weekday). On a weekend, we've got away without paying at all as neither end of the journey is checked, and if there's a ticket seller on the train, he doesn't get to us in the 10-minute journey:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Why not give us the whole story then we can tell you who is in the right and who is in the wrong.0 -

Looks like you are a proud thief then doesn't it. No wonder other peoples tickets are so high.0 -

Did you read the document linked to?0 -
Nope, you had a quote and a link that you seemed confident would confirm your quote.
So your saying the link throws doubt on your original quote?
Would it not have been more helpful just state that you didnt need to have a ticket to board a train?0
