Trying to buy house - seller might be changing mind?

So my parents have (very kindly) offered to buy a house for my wife and i to live in for a few years. This is partly as an investment for them (they dont currently own a house, but get accomodation with their work) but will need one in 10 years when they retire, and is partly to give us the chance to save up a deposit rather than spending lots on rent.

We looked round lots of houses at the weekend and really set our hearts on one of them. (It was a second viewing for this particular one). Both my parents and we really liked it - We made an offer on the spot to the owner for the asking price. The lady said she would have to talk to her husband, but provisionally 'of course that sounds fine'.

All well and good, we thought!
... Except wednesday has rolled around, and we haven't had any word back from them. We're waiting for written acceptance of the offer, which we thought would just be a formality, but now the gossip from the agent is that the owners are having second thoughts about selling!

Does this happen often? I suppose if they do back out, you have to look on the bright side - we haven't spent anything on surveys or solicitors so far. Even so, we like the house and this is a bit unexpected.

We have had this happen. In our case it was because the house they wanted to buy had been sold and they wouldn;t consider any other house. It's a real pain but there's nothing you can do. I'd suggest a chase-up call to the agent to find out what's going on.

Making a full price offer is possibly part of your problem, particularly if the house is new to the market. You may have convinced the seller that they have underpriced. Even if you are minded to offer full price, start 1000 or 2500 below.
