Corsa B Fuel Consumption

Hello I've posted about my corsa before, still having ongoing problems with it.

Recently it seems to be pretty much eating through petrol, mum used to use it for a 10 mile commute every day 5 days a week and the odd trip out to the shop and it'd only use about £10 in fuel. Now its using over £20 a week.

My dad has changed the air filter, the fuel filter and the spark plugs all in an attempt to try and rectify the problem it has (it overrevs itself, looses power, cuts out when at junctions/roundabouts etc and it makes a strange noise - hard to describe unless you can hear it, i suppose if you imagine the sound of a old style type being chewed up by your radio you'll get some sort of idea -

I've been told before it could be something to do with the EGR valve, we've researched online where this valve is and how to clean it but think it may be beyond my dad's mechanical ability and he can only do basic stuff. We took it to the local garage about this problem, they put it on the computer and said no faults came up and basically weren't interested until it'd totally conked out.

So what I'm basically asking is what sort of fuel consumption do you get of your corsa b? Mines a 1.2, P reg.

We reset the milometer everytime we fill up, and from filling up with £20 we get between 80 and 90 miles before its back on the red needing more fuel. I'm not much of a MPG whizz but at my approx calcuations we're only getting like about 25 MPG, my dads 4x4 diesel does more than this.

Any ideas? Thank you
Or is it best to try and out it?

Wanting to try and resolve it without having to spend a fortune at the garage as the moneys abit tight at the minute.

On my vectra, the egr valve was easily removeable 9and caused the cutting out problem). buy a haynes manual, it'll pay for itself.
