Best heating for a summerhouse?

I posted a thread earlier this week for advice on solar heeting for my textile workshop in my converted garage.

My garage is similar to a summer house, as it has no gas and detached from the house.

I was looking for something solar powered, but don't think I can find anything powerful enough....

but what do you think to this ??

Has anyone had this fitted, any comments?

I'm just wondering if anyone has low cost electric heating advice? Any particular models, brands that you would recommend?

I thought I needed heating 24 / 7 over the winter to stop the fabric getting damp, but would a dehumidifier do this??

All electrical heating option cost pretty much the same. I wouldn't bother with that thing you get any meaningful heat out it in the winter. Best bet would be double even threaten thickness insulation on the walls and boarded up garage door. Then an fan heater for quick warm up when your using the building.

As mankysteve says insulate insulate insulate and ensure you also have some ventilation to stop any damp. Don't forget the floor and roof not just the walls

Your heating input then would be far less. You could have a thermostatically controlled heater of some sort left on to keep a minimum temperature through the winter. We have a wall mounted 400w panel on a thermostat in our utility room and this keeps the room at a pleasant 17 or 18 degrees throughout the cooler months. Something a bit higher rated would be needed for a garage sized room but you get the idea

If you don't insulate you will just be heating the atmosphere and throwing your money away

    Best of luck
  • the garage was already converted when we moved in. There is some insulation and then boarded and plastered... I can't insulate anymore, without ripping everything out and starting again.

Ok just make sure you have some ventilation, then maybe get an oil filled radiator with thermostat or wall mounted panel heater. The one we have in utility is http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Heating_Index/Slim_Heat/index.html but there are loads of types out there.
  • ull need to insulate he floor, and damp course sheet(15quid) roll out insultion from b&q is 3 quid a roll, pluss the ceiling, i used foil covered stuff from wickes wich was 15quid., then insulae the windows to tripple glzed with perspex. or cling film if low on funds. then for actual heat, small windmill, from a low rpm 20v motor and blades made from drain pipe. high ampage cable, and some deep cycle batteries, youll want over 100amps. (some companies give the batteriesaway if ur lucky, they use them for server bckup power). then a 12 volt heating element, charge controller, old hot water tank. and your done. thatll prob set you back 200quid. but free heat!
