Severe brake judder
Options
We took our car in with severe brake judder ,expecting to be told it was the discs ,only to be told its the ABS rings ?!
Hubby usually does most repairs himself but tbh when it comes to ABS ,he is clueless .
could this really cause severe brake judder and noise?
Also been quoted just over £200 by the main dealer ,its a Hyundai Santa FE ,that sound right ?
cheers

nup ,the ABS light doesnt come on0

Pull the abs fuse and see if it goes away.
Ask the garage to explain exactly how the abs rings can cause brake judder.
I'm sceptical.
Edit: It is possible that the rings have corroded and are rubbing on something else. I can't see how that would cause judder though.0 -
it is probably the abs operating and not brake judder.
the abs reluctor rings can corrode and crack the sensor then thinkss wheel/wheels have locked and operates the abs.
smart cars suffer with it something terrible
have a look at this thread for a peugeot but will give you an idea of possible cause.

hope that helps0 -
Yes ,thanks taking the fuse out solves the problem ,so does that mean it is the rings ?0

Well it means that the problem is almost certainly caused by the abs system. As has been said, the rings have probably corroded.
I'm afraid the garage might be right after all.
The only diy fix I can think of is to clean the rings, but then I wouldn't be too hopeful.0 -
Thank you ,thanks to the link atleast we now know where they are and what they look like so when hubby gets home he can have a looksee at them
you would hope a main dealership wouldnt try to pull a fast one .....but you never know0 -
Lots of cars have the ABS ring as part of the brake disc casting, a more sensible solution in my view as they are not that much more expensive than normal, and being cast are less susceptible to damage. Plus you get new ones when the discs are changedI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Do a google search for reluctor rings you can get them seperate for most cars now at fraction of cost of driveshafts etc.and get a decent independant garage to repair it they will be cheaper than main dealer0

Reet ,we had a looksee and the rings had several teeth missing ,obviously damaged and looks like we landed lucky with our main dealership -Minstergate ,they only charged £200 (less than quoted ) and replaced a couple of other things for free ,V Happy0
