Hi Darren,
These are not exactly rent-related but should help to increase your income.
Depending on your age and the hours you work, you may be eligible to claim Working Tax Credits (WTC). If you have no children and/or are not disabled, you need to over be 25 years old and working at least 30hrs pw. For more information, see: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/benefits/benefits_and_tax_credits_for_people_in_work.htm#working_tax_credit
Depending on your housing situation, e.g., whether you live alone or you a rent a room in a shared house, you may be eligible for the Single Person's Council Tax Discount. For more information see: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/YourlocalcouncilandCouncilTax/CouncilTax/DG_10037422
Alternatively there's Council Tax Benefit, which I know little about so will have to leave it to more knowledgeable posters to explain. For information see: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_10018923
Hope that helps.

Depending on where you live, you may also be entitled to Local Housing Allowance (LHA) - check your local government website, there's usually a calculator in the housing section.0
