SD / SD 'HC' cards for digital camera.

Options
Hi,

Quite often lurk here, but now looking for assistance…

I’ve just purchased a Vivitar 7690 7.1MP digital camera for my daughter. Due to vague notes regarding the type and size of SD card that can be used in the camera (PDF manual says maximum of 8Gb – camera box says a maximum of 4Gb), I emailed their support address and got this as a reply:

“Thank you for contacting us with your inquiry regarding the memory card for the Camera: Vivicam 7690.

Please note that the Camera is compatible with SD card up to 8GB. We suggest you to use any SD card up to 8GB only. It is not compatible with SDHC cards.”

I thought that standard SD cards were 2Gb max due to being formatted as FAT, while 4Gb and bigger are ‘HC’ due to being formatted as FAT32?

In short, I don’t think I can get anything larger than 2Gb unless I go ‘HC’, which they suggest isn’t supported in the above camera.

Q. Can you get >2Gb, but not ‘HC’?

Quick search on play, amazon, memorybits etc is showing anything greater than 2Gb as ‘HC’.

Any advice appreciated.

Yes if you look in the right places e.g. Transcend 4GB Secure Digital (133X) here where you said that you had looked!

Thanks espresso - didn't spot that - did say I had a quick look :D

Looks like there's no stock. Using Transcend 4Gb as a google search shows either discontinued or no stock elsewhere too.

Thanks for the link though. May have to be a 2Gb.

Staples had both SD and Micro SD, 2Gb for £6, in store, which is near enough online prices, but Lexor brand, I think.
    Move along, nothing to see.

The problem with cameras and 'HC' (High Capacity) cards is more to do with the devices ability to access storage above the 4Gb limit (just like Windows 32 bit editions have trouble with more than 3.5Gb Ram).
I have a 16Gb CF card formatted with FAT32, my Sony DSLR reads it, my friends camera doesn't.

Anyway, with only a 7.1Mp camera, a 2Gb card is good for 200 photos.
