Billed twice for same hire car

On 31 March 2009 I made a booking through Carhire3000 for a car from 11 to 14 April. I then changed my mind 15 minutes later and cancelled the booking. I was charged £76.53 and the refund appeared the following month on my credit card. I then made the same reservation through Holiday Autos because they included the insurance excess. On 14 April I rang and extended the car until 20 April and was charged £226.50. On 19 March 2010 a charge of £76.53 appeared on my statement from Carhire3000. When I rang them they said they had received a signed rental agreement from Europcar so I must have gone ahead with the cancelled booking. I am now going round in circles between the three companies with each of them saying it is not their responsibility and to contact the other. This booking took place on Easter Saturday and the place was incredibly busy and my husband was only interested in checking the car, not thinking for a moment that he might be signing a cancelled rental agreement. Does anyone have any idea where I go from here?

Send Carhire3000 a copy of the cancellation, showing them that you did NOT hire the car. Also send them a copy of the hire agreement with Holiday Autos, showing you hired it with someone else who had a better deal.

Ask them to refund the £76.53 within 7 days of receipt of the letter.

    Send it recorded delivery.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Thanks pinkshoes. Unfortunately I have already been down that route. Carhire3000 agree that I cancelled the car but have a signed rental agreement in their possession which proves that a car was hired with them as the third party supplier and will not cancel the fee until Europcar cancels theirs. Europcar say I signed the rental agreement so has nothing to do with them. Holiday Autos say the booking was completed so my problem is with Carhire3000 who then repeat their original case. I was thinking of taking Carhire3000 through the small claims court but they are based in Manchester and I am in London so if they moved it near them it would cost more in train fares than I have lost.

Issue against all of them and let them argue against each other. As they are Limited liability companies even if they do defend, the case will stay in your local court.

Send letter again entitled "Letter before Action". Ask for money back within 7 days or you'll be taking to small claims court. Send recorded.

They'll pay your costs if you have to travel to court, and quite clearly you've paid for hire car already, so will win.

Sounds like OP has already been down that route.

Just sue. Will be in your local county court.

I'm not really sure how to use this so don't know if i'm putting it in the right place but can't figure out how else to post! Any help would be appreciated though please. . .

I hired a car through carhire3000 for 2 days in Ireland. On my return I discovered that extra money had been taken from my credit card by europcar so I enquired why this was and asked for a refund from carhire3000. The reply I received in connection to this was from traveljigsaw and they blamed Alamo! So all in all that's 4 companies involved and over double the amount I originally intended to pay being taken for just a two day car hire! Nobody will accept responsibility and the replies I have received are claiming it's for some insurance (and it's all in jargon and abbreviations that mean nothing to me) but I was already forced to take out their extra "cover everything" insurance, so that is not the amount I'm querying! I have given them a week to reply and arrange a refund or I shall take further action but that was an empty threat really as I don't know what action to take next! Can anyone give me any advice please?
