I have already purchased the teak oil, woodstain, and half made the wooden compost bin before I thought I should check the effects of the substances on the eventual compost which I hope to use on my veg.

I think it would be ok on the outside of the bin but not inside (sorry if this is stating the obvious ;)). I apply it to my garden bench and as long as I don't use too much it only sinks in a few millimeters, so it shouldn't seep all the way through to the inside of your bn.

Personal opinion would be that if you use it on the inside and allow it to dry thoroughly before you start putting waste in it, the amount likely to leach back into the compost will be tiny and unlikely to have much impact on the compost - particularly as you often find the bits at the edge don't compost down well and have to be chucked back in for another go - thereby mixing it up and further diluting any chemical effect. Alternatively you could try a more natural oil like Linseed oil for the inside as opposed to a petrol based oil, but even that could in theory get into the soil.

I have now had a email back from Wilks that says Teak Oil is fine and will not have any health probs if the compost is used for veg.
