Bratislava for Solo Female?

Hi - anyone got any experience of what Bratislava would be like for a single female (late 30s - not into nightlife etc, going simply as a tourist)?

I need to have a holiday without the OH and it's somewhere I've always fancied, but normally when I go alone I stick to "safe" places where I can speak the language. Just felt like being adventurous this time!

Any hints / tips gratefully received.

Hi Albannach1876, I will be visiting Bratislava this summer. Im flying to Budapest for 2 days > then geting the coach to Bratislava for 1 night and then the next day geting the train to Vienna.

There doesn't look like a great deal to do in Bratislava. I usually like to do the tours, but so far have only found one walking tour (which i've booked) for around £13.

I stayed there a couple of years ago. Quite a nice place in bits. Down by the river and in the old town is nice.
Also take a train to Vienna. Lovely place. Not a long journey and cheap. Trains are ok and not too busy.

I was there at Easter. Bratislava calls itself 'The Big Little Town' and it's fair to say that it's not very big at all. Even if you visit most of the things highlighted in your guide book, I think that it ould only take 1.5 days maximum to see everything. Go hunting for all the humourous statues, walk around thr very nice old town, walk up to the soviet style Slavin monument.

As hearts says, trains to Vienna are frequent. As i recall it's about 12euro for a return, or 15 euro for a return ticket which includes Vienna transportation.

I was there about three years ago, I think. It's nice, but there isn't a lot to do, really. Good little art museum. And a cafe on the main square selling 40/60?? kinds of hot chocolate. I tried three :)

I went there a few years ago and thought it was awful, sorry. Nothing to do, hotel was awful (obviously they are probably not all like that, but it coloured my experience), the people weren't friendly and I didn't think it was even a very pretty place to wander around.

I went to Llublijana (?sp) on the same trip, and that was much much nicer, I would recommend it any day.

I was in bratislava last month with 2 others, unfortunately we were only able to spend half a day there as our original flight was cancelled due to the volvanic ash. As has been said the old town is very small and in half a day we were able to see pretty much all of it - of course i mean that we didn't actually go into any museums or galleries but merely saw them from outside. The only thing we didn't see close up was the castle. We then hopped on a train to Vienna for the rest of our holiday. There is definetly a lot more to see in Vienna but Bratislava isn't without it's charms. Our hotel (Kyjev) was slated on numerous websites but we all thought it was great and we all agreed that the breakfast was one of the best we've had! I would recommend going but if you do, don't spend too long there and instead make a trip, or trips to nearby Vienna and Budapest, which are bigger and more attractive.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm planning to arrive via Vienna and may well take a trip to Budapest - hadn't thought of that!

Is Bratislava safe enough for a lone, fairly streetwise female though?
