I have been ofered online work and for payment they want my bank detales so they can pay me. They want to know my acount number and sort code. As I will be doing the work on my pc how safe it is to give an organization these details. When I pay for things online there are safetey things in place to stop fraud but how safe are my account number details to give to an employer.

Depends who the employer is?
I get regular scam Emails offering online jobs. How certain are you you're not being gullible? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I'm sorry, but it wouldn't be me.0

What I meant is the company is good, but I dont know what can be done if someone knows my bank details. I mean if I give someone my account number what can be done with it illegally. I just want to know how safe an acount number is if it gets in the hands of someone who would want to use it for gain. Is that posible0

They could setup Direct Debit o Standing order on your account.
Also, assuming they already have your name, address, phone number, maybe date of birth, potemtialy they could do even more damage to you.
Could you ask them to send you check every week or month?0 -
If you give someone a cheque they'll have your account number and sort code, and I've always had my wages paid to my bank account so all my employers have had my details.
Potentially if someone knows all your details including name and address etc they could set up a direct debit or something, but the DD guarantee covers you for fraudulent direct debits. If the company is reputable you shouldn't have anything to worry about.0 -
Every cheque you issue (remember them?
) has your account number and sort code on it. With only those details people can pay into your account but not withdraw funds.
I'd be more concerened that you ensure you are actually working for a legit firm and not being ripped off by a 21st C version of envelope stuffing scams.0 -
Send anybody a cheque and they will have all that and your signature.
There is a very remote possibility that they could set up payments from the account but the bank should be able to confirm if it is a genuine request. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7174760.stm0 -
Thank you all for your answers. It isnt a scam as it is a real job but i just wondered about risks0

If you're convinced at the 'legality' of the company - then there should be no problems. Over 90% of the working population are paid via a means that requires the employer to hold their Bank details. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
