Right time to BUY?????First time buyer in Bath

Hi All

I am hopefully moving down to Bath next month and my boyfriend and I are very keen to buy. However, both of us know very little about the property market- would it be a good time to buy down in Bath? We are really keen to find somewhere that needs a bit of work and 'do it up'.
He is a carpenter and I'm a scientist so neither of us earn big money- we'd be looking around the £200,000 mark for a two bed place.
Any advice would be most appreciated!!

  • Hello

I live about 9 miles outside of Bath - do you have to be right in Bath, or could you cope with living a few miles away?
My sig's too large, apparently - so apologies to whoever's space I was taking up.:lipsrseal
  • Hi

Many thanks for the response, outside of Bath would be great too.

    We're not too piccy!
  • I only ask because we are now looking to move, our house is going on the market next week, and we will be able to get a three bed for £150K, so I feel you may get more for your money if you consider some of the areas surrounding. And frankly, I hate the centre of Bath, I think it's a stinky hole. But that's just my opinion :D

If you want to PM me I'd be happy to try and help with surrounding areas.

Are you moving down here with your jobs, or will you look for jobs once here?

the centre of Bath is very beautiful indeed, but, it has one of the highest toxicity rates air-wise outside of london - probably cos its surrounded by hills, and the fumes stay above the town!

I delayed buying for years waiting for the 'right time' and all that happened was that property prices trebbled. and i've had friends sell their houses and go in to rented accomodation because they were convinced the market would fall only to discover that it's still going up and now they can't even buy back their old house.

If you can afford it - do it!

    good luck

I don't think anyone truely knows what house prices are going to do in years to come. Reading various government reports and statistical information, there seems to be a general feeling that house prices can't keep going up forever although it may do in the short term. I certainly don't see prices coming down in the immediate future but personally I do believe they'll be a readjustment of prices at one point or other. As the last post stated, if you can afford it do it!!!!

I guess you are renting in the short term? that will give you time to get to know the area and the local property market, and decide whether/where you want to buy there. you might hate it and want to move again ASAP!

there are so many factors that are personal to your situation that you have to take into account too, it is almost impossible to say if its a good time to buy!

It might be possible to find somewhere in places like combe down, oldfield park etc. There are some cheaper but not so nice areas though, definatley avoid whiteway, southdown, twerton, fox hill, snow hill.
  • many thanks all.
    you've been a great help!
