virgin media

hi, im new here, im having problems with virgin media, basically we are paying for a 20mb broadband connection but at best we recieve 0.24mb, and half the time the internet will just stop working for anywhere between 5 minutes and a whole day.
weve tried talking to the helpline but theyre no help, basically were really fed up now and want to leave virgin and go with someone else.
but virgin say that we would have to pay them £180 (the remainder of our contract) if we want to leave, but the way i see it is that they arent suplying the service were paying for and as such have already broken the contract so why should i have to pay to leave?
any legal advice would be greatly appreciated, preferably on leaving them, but forcing them to fix it would be good aswell.

Virgin were the company I was with (didn't use the net much) but was getying about 40kbps. They never even bothered trying to contest a breach of contract.0
